All our strategies are designed to make life better for that person with disability, especially children with severe disabilities

The first step is to ensure the child is medically assessed to know the percentage of disability and rule out the possibility of having any contagious sickness. Secondly is to ensure the child is properly registered and issued with the disability Identity Card from the National Council of Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) to enable the child access government services easily.

The disability type is professionally assessed and description given on the type of assistive device needed so that we can provide the most suitable to that specific case. The device must match the disability with a sole aim of curing the inability.  The combination of therapy and provision of corrective assistive devices is a major step towards curing inability, Like provision of wheel chairs, calipers, walkers and others.

The centre assesses the capacity of every child to design the appropriate educational programme suitable for every child’s disability challenge. Those who can learn to read and write are offered that opportunity at their individual learning speed. Those without some limbs are trained on compensatory skills to enable them use whichever parts of the body is active. Those who can do vocational courses like tailoring, Hairdressing, sawing, drawings, computer literacy and others are accessed the opportunity to learn them. Music and singing is done as part of speech therapy as we train all the children to appreciate and worship God. Outdoor activities are planned as well for both entertainment and socializing.

To lobby and advocate for the child with severe disability to be included in the family resources allocation list, government cash transfer programme and for those with vocational skills to be provided with logistical support to begin and continue with some economic activities. Communities are sensitized to stop looking at these children as community liability and taboo. They are 100% human and can be helped to live a dignified life. Ongoing research is done to identify policy gaps that prevent resources flowing to benefit the child with disability. The cost of assistive devices has remained too high for the poor parent/ guardian of a child with disability to afford. There is great need to invent environmentally friendly assistive devices that can increase the independence of a person with disability towards self-reliance. Disability services provision Centre’s have not adequately been devolved.

Mobility is a major hindrance and challenge to any person with disability-especially a child with severe disability that has to be transported all the time. The solution to this is to establish units where all the services related to disability needs can be accessed easily.  The Dear Foundation Kenya calls them Medgo Dear Centre . At Kithyoko, we are committed to building the capacity of the centre to accommodate 60 Children to access, therapy, education, vocational skills, Spiritual, Physical and Mental support all at one place.  The Centre shall host local and international volunteers, disability experts and advocates, national and international policy unit, hospital and orthopedic workshops to fabricate assistive devices locally.  Once Kithyoko Centre is properly established, it will offer some training to the students interested in committing their lives to serve in the disability sector.
